3D FAQs
How do I get 3D to work?
Record a full golf swing from the face-on angle using any recording mode within the Onform app (iOS) and make sure you record in 120 or 240 fps. Then when viewing the video, tap the '3D' button in the video player. We recommend using an iPhone 14 or newer or a 2020 iPad Pro or newer for best results.
Is the 3D data accurate?
We've tested our data against traditional gold-standard systems including GEARS, OptiTrack, EMS (Electromagnetic Systems) and Qualisys. Our data is generally very close to all these systems and usually within just a few degrees for rotations and a few percent of translational movements. See our model card for full details about our testing accuracy, comparison and applicability of our models.
Do I have to be connected to internet?
Once you've installed Onform and downloaded the models (happens automatically or can be triggered manually from the Onform settings panel), we don't require the internet when computing the 3D model, so you are free to use it completely offline.
Does it work for putting and chipping?
At this time we only support full swings. It's on our roadmap to add putting and chipping.
Can I capture from any angle?
We designed the feature to be used when recording from the face-on angle at about hip height. For the most accurate data, see our 'How to record a swing' blog post for best practices. Ideally, make each recording from the same location to improve comparisons and keep the iPhone/iPad still (tripod recommended but not required) and perpendicular to the golfer. We will be adding support for data metrics from the 'down the line' angle in the near future.
Does the iPhone or iPad have to be on a tripod to work properly?
No, you can simply hold the device and capture like a normal video. Of course it helps to be still, but you don't have to be 'tripod still'. Even for 2D video, the camera angle matters, so try to be consistent with the camera placement from swing to swing for the most accurate comparative metrics.
What can I do with the 3D information?
The visualization is a great help to better understanding the mechanics of a golf swing. For instance, enabling the hand-path visualization helps a student to better see their clubpath, and help diagnose reasons for slices and hooks. You can also use it to see setup stance, takeaway and other key aspects of the swing. 3D data provides objective information that a coach can use to diagnose swing flaws and compare before and after changes are made.
Using the 3D swing data helps to demonstrate key techniques and enables objective comparison for improvement. Understanding your swing data is the first step toward putting it to use with your coaching.
Can I use 3D with multiple cameras?
Yes! You can easily use our multi-cam features with 3D. Simply set your primary device to any recording mode and set the other devices to 'Auxiliary'. You'll get amazing multi-angle recordings with 3D and data! Below is an example of using 3 cameras (2 iPhones and 1 iPad in this case) to capture face-on, down-the-line and impact, along with the 3D view. You can adjust the view panes with the 'layout' button in the lower right corner as seen below.
